I'm going to turn off the news tonight too, and watch something more cheery, like The Hunger Games series.

Rather than Rand, I would direct you to Heinlein, he predicted "the Crazy Years" in his writing. Myself, I think we have an overload of media and information with all our devices. Violence sells.... kids love sharks.... we are at heart a violent species. We don't have good parenting in our society as a base for our society. Mass mental illness.

I'm not a church goer, but I think we have a lack of spirituality in our country too.

I had a kid in class today, who's brain was a total disconnect. He had no internal moral compass, screamed a lot, was only able to focus with a computer in front of him (and mind you wouldn't TRY if the computer learning program was not to his liking) age 7 or 8. All it takes is to put that kid in a situation where he has access to guns, and some well meaning uncle takes him out and teaches him to shoot. Hey presto we have another one. No behavior plan on this little brat mind you.

Kids like this need to be tracked, with gusto. If and when they get to high school and show a tendency to violence, they should be tracked into a voc tech, and if they can't handle that, should be on a "flagged" list, along with felons, and dishonorably discharged veterans. Sometimes they DO mature and graduate ok... but if a kid can't even get a diploma due to their aggressive behavior, there's something wrong.

I don't like this scenario, because the verbiage in the Constitution is "the right to bear arms shall not be infringed upon" and that takes in ANY gun limitations. The correct approach IF we wish to modify the right to bear arms, we need a new Constitutional Amendment. Good luck getting that.

We had a similar scenario to this a month ago in a high school I was subbing in, they called a lock down and said "this is not a drill" and you should have seen me dive for the door with my key and lock it. A kid who had been expelled was seen on campus, and he had made a threat .... we huddled in the dark like bunnies for 15 minutes. Luckily someone captured the creep. For every mass shooting we have, we have 100 scares like that. Never any fun.

That was a nice, thoughtful response.

I disagree that we are a violent species. I regret life on this planet has been aptly described as "killing for a living," so I go after the voiceless carrots and Reece's Peanut Butter Cups to feed my gut. Personally, I can't stand strife, so I disagree. It reminds me of the time a friend kept trying to push evolution theory on me. It doesn't matter to me either way; Genesis covers a lot of territory in two pages. It was the nagging insistence that was beyond debate that annoyed, so I told him he was right. He had descended from aquatic apes, but I had descended from the angels. (I was being sarcastic.)

We have a hyperactive kid at church that is beyond obedience. Last Sunday, he was banging on the piano and everybody thought it was me. When have I ever pounded on the piano during church? No matter, I would be the one caught holding the bag.

There are many arguments about guns. I take the opposite opinion because I don't think government should be the only body with guns; much evil can occur during a slow response time. I am of the opinion the Second Amendment was created to protect the common man from evil regimes; there have been enough of those in history to make me think it can't happen here.

Then again, the Constitution was written for a moral people. In another venue, I recently raised the question of whether a government can abuse liberties individuals have not first abused themselves. We do not teach responsibility. The EVO! and I walk through syringes just about every day. We've got kind people who run a needle exchange to facilitate safe drug use. I don't expect the users to have any more respect for the environment than they do for themselves.

It has been said communism and other funky forms of government work well in homogenous cultures where people share the same work ethic, the same spiritual values, the same concepts of balancing work and pleasure. In America, we have people who want to free-ride and have the other "half" work twice as hard to support their habits. As Dire Straits said in another context, "That ain't workin'."

People are complicated, and I fear misdiagnosis more than anything. How often do we hear neighbors of perps saying they never suspected anything? How many times is hindsight 20-20? How many times is history the propaganda of the victor?

You said violence sells, a former colleague of mine would have said stupidity sells. He wrote science fiction - this was about 20 years ago - and he was more than frustrated with the offerings on TV because it was all S&V. He said there was so much of it because screenwriters didn't want to take the time to develop a compelling plot, so they took the shortcut to get peoples' animal instincts aroused instead of doing something to stimulate the brain for noble purpose - like figuring out what we're going to do with all these wild children.

Said colleague was very flattered to have received a long, thoughtful response to an inquiry sent to Neil Peart, the drummer in Rush. This was back when people used pen and paper and postage stamps. Peart, at least then, was a very intelligent libertarian. He's since had much tragedy in his life, as I recall.

I remember being freaked out when I worked in an inner-city school that had telephones in each room. That was long before the days of SRO's.

I'm not even going to proofread all that. I'll read it tomorrow and embarrass myself. It's funner that way.

I was never much into this song, but I adore this rendition. It gives me chills on chills:

The problem with YouTube/Vevo is I can't listen to Justin without also wanting to watch. He's in a separate window now.

Burt was right. So was Jesus, same theme. In a given school system, there are only so many kids who fit the profile of

1) paranoid schizophrenic (this guy thought everyone was bullying him)
2) have no father to guide them at home
3) is shunned by the whole student body and/or has no friends
4) has access to guns
5) has a history of "trouble making" for want of a better term. A history of impulsive behavior and disruption.
6) has a Y chromosome.

That is the profile. Again and again Ad agencies are tracking me. I would think the FBI could identify these kids and track THEM, and all you need is school records. Believe me these kids have red flags on them (we call them Frequent Flyers in the school system] It should be a simple matter of denying those with this profile the right to buy guns until they are a mature 30 years of age. See above about "infringement" on 2nd amendment rights. I don't suggest this lightly.

I frankly feel that we need a psychiatric diagnosis in the DSM (that's the psychologists' "Bible") of "failure to parent" and when a kid goes through the system as a train wreck, early intervention should be invoked. Parents of these identified children should have mandatory "parenting" school, or if they can';t parent and send their disruptive child to school, or keep changing schools to stay ahead of the system, they need to be tracked too.

I'm emotional right now, leslee. Tell me if this is an infringement on basic rights? Or is it practical common sense??? Am I being selfish or what? I tell you, when kids like this leave the room for their special reading groups, the entire energy of the room drops and it's peaceful. That's all ages.

We are like wolves, a violent species as youngsters, but as we get older, we become more peaceful yes. More kind and loving.

I am sorry you are hurting and afraid for all the children for whom you care. I'm more detached, and as somebody who is terrible at getting into peoples' heads, I make it a habit to stay out. But, because I feel for your fears, I will jump into the fray of the latest national distraction and start spouting nonsense like all the other know-it-alls.

1) I don't have any answers, but you knew that.
2) I disagree on innate violence. I think sweet little babies are loving and adorable. Hate has to be learned because it is so silly.
3) No amount of legislation is going to stop somebody intent on killing.
4) Schools weren't the zoos they now are when I worked in them. In my experience, I never had an evil child in any of my classes. All tried, and most did well.
5) I am averse to pinning diagnoses on children. I prefer to give people as much space as they need to mend their ways.
6) Knowing when to interdict is an eternal question. It's easy to take credit for stopping crimes that wouldn't have happened anyway; it's too late in the opposite situation.
7) If informatics are so scientific, why is my spam box full of porn? Why does the computer think it is Justin Timberlake on whom I have a crush? I've said before, my bank can't figure out I buy Justin Hayward/Moody Blues tickets. It doesn't fit my profile. So, a human gave me the phone number of the fraud department, which I have to call in the nine-minute window to unlock the card. Sometimes, I have to try again in two hours.
8) In my Weltanschauung, life is a series of choices. Sure, we can be habituated chemically into comfort zones; but one could write a thousand pages of computer code to build a profile on one person, and that person could on a whimsy choose to do any number of things outside that profile. People can and do pull themselves out of ugly childhood situations, many survived concentration camps without going crazy, some have Road to Damascus awakenings. I would tend to believe putting labels on children makes it more comfortable to fit the diagnosis. People are motivated to live up or down to expectations.
9) Pundits are saying more gun control stops school shootings here, and others are saying less gun control stops school shootings there.
10) As you correctly infer, guns don't float around killing; it is people with a big empty inside. Then, some people live with horrible economic disadvantages and emotional pain, but they are kindly and civil. 11) It is terribly unpopular to say so, and it is not considered politically viable, but I do believe the two-parent culture with one who stays at home with the children is something no institution can replace. I once spoke with a high-ranking state judge who said he could reduce any hardened criminal to tears by asking him to tell him something about his paternal father.
12) In my faith, it is taught that pride is a horrible sin. Pride is defined as going against the will of God. Anybody who does not respect any part of creation, including themselves (I'm guilty.), as part of God's glorious work and get with the program of trying to make the world live up to the measure of its creation, is rebelling against God. Schools prefer value-neutrality and teach we're randomly-evolved creatures with no rhyme or reason. From that, it is easy to conclude there's no harm in bumping a few of us off now and then.
13) I despise hype and so I typically avoid getting drawn into the latest news cycle. It makes me feel like a puppet.
14) I do not wish to say any more on the matter. People are hurting. I am far away in mind and body. Big decisions should be made when cooler heads prevail. You know I despise abdicating responsibility to that abstraction known as government.

Going back on my word again, which is worth nothing, what I should have said is:

I don't think wallowing in evil serves anyone. Sure, the TV wants us to see darkness, think darkness, obsess over darkness. What has it gotten us? I know my ideas are not popular, but my personal way of trying to keep evil out of my life (and I fail all the time) is to try to keep my own brain in the light. How can we lift others to a higher place, if all we have to offer is the void of being reactionary? Nuff for now. I have much research to do today.

Debating "why" is a waste of time IMHO. He's koo koo. Lock 'em up. I simply think more can be done to limit gun sales to certain people with certain profiles. This is nothing new, young men under 25 years of age pay higher insurance rates because they have the highest accident rates. This is along the same lines. We also don't allow 5th graders to buy guns. Some people are just not emotionally responsible enough to own weapons. Apparently this guy didn't drive either, no license which tells you something right there.

I'm sorry to see this drop out of the news cycle. I do like the idea of Trump calling families of the victims of various school shootings together... we can alter purchase parameters, and we can up security in some schools. Several schools I teach at have good security, some do not. We live and learn with this.

I think some of it is inevitable in a free society... the genie is out of the bottle, you can't lock up all the guns. And some of it IS "The Will of God".... only I look at it as "Darwin in Action" boils down to the same thing. Humans have no natural predators to keep their growth rate in check. So we have to "limit" ourselves. Law of Nature if you will. Cry

Life is short. What if memory is more than it appears, in the sense that you can take it with you? What if it isn't? Either way, should I fill my mind with fear and horror or make it a beautiful place where evil cannot disturb my serenity? My thoughts and actions are all I can control. If I think fear and horror, it becomes a part of me, and the perps win. There is no art in destruction. So, I share a happy thought:

By the way, I wonder what Justin's up to these days. If I were gutsier, I'd, "#JHQA: How are you?"

Exactly. I simply look at disasters and try to figure out how to NOT let them happen again. Human Factors (it's a field of study)

I got up the next day and went to work in a school. You HAVE to go on. We are fighting a very gentle war as teachers, a war against ignorance poverty and badology in general. You can't let it bother you or you'd sit in the corner drawing daisies on the wall.

I love the Moodies but it's not NEED.... I could do this without them. But they're a big help indeed, for emotional well being.

I admire your maturity. I hope I didn't imply I was looking for a control-freakery, codependent relationship with Justin. I hope I never put anybody in the position of feeling obligated to serve me. Yet, need is relative. I will continue breathing without Justin, but I cannot feel as good as I do at his concerts without him.

My band teacher from elementary school was engaged with helping problem children. He was a foster parent or something like that, too. One kid returned and killed him and his wife. I trust my band teacher died with a clear conscience, knowing he tried to reach so many kids and did help a lot of them.

That sucks. Having said that (the dark shadows inside my head say....) you never know what goes on behind closed doors.

In counseling, it is a classical scenario, a client feels incredible guilt and lack of self worth within themselves, Eventually they "transfer" those feelings to someone else, and the anger turns outward rather than inward. Usually they are just angry with their parent/counselor, place the blame THERE rather than on the right culprit. The final stage is to embrace the feelings and just live with it.

The danger in "helping others" is at some point in their healing, they'll blame YOU for their situation, then sometimes perfectly good people get killed. Cry Not always, just in spectacular cases.

Gotta go to work. Latah...
