If you find a chance, watch *Frozen* very cute snowman in there who dreams of summer..... long story. Not too bad for an "ikky" Disney flick.

I was just thinking about Micco's bad habits.... he may have to go to doggie Heaven before I leave the house again for a long trip. He's pretty sickly actually. Moans in pain.... either that or he's really a drama queen can't tell.

Getting ready to bop down to Portland to see family and see Mike D in IGN. Gotta do chores around house and clean and load car, all that....

I used to like nothing about snow, but today I thought I like melting snow.

I like looking at the snow on Hurricane Ridge here where I live. With all the rain, when it rains, we get lovely snow, and it stays up in the mountains where it belongs and becomes a snow pack for warmer times. Very lovely.

The Evo and I saw something really cool going through the woods this morning. It was a pile of reddish earth, loose, the top of which was suspended on hairs of ice about an inch and a half long. I don't know how it formed, but maybe there was moisture under some earth that was thrown down, and the ice quickly expanded vertically as it froze. It has to be more complex than that. I destroyed some of the formation as I figured the sun would melt it before the next person came along to enjoy it. There were no fibers around which the ice formed, but they were all vertical with a breadth around 1 millimeter. There were locks of these hairs, and they all had a tussle of dirt atop them. I even put some of the ice hairs in my mouth to make sure they weren't formed around anything.

Cool! Maybe the wind caught them and blew them into strange shapes before freezing. It's the same effect as Pele's Hair in Hawaii. Near the volcanoes, the lava sometimes gets blow up by the wind, wafted around and comes down as spun glass... festoons the bushes.

I saw peach blossoms tonight on my walk. And it was very very clear, the stars were out.

Nice things about winter: you can stay in and ignore your yard, and you have a excuse... it's too cold outside to work. Feeling much better I seem to have kicked that ugly little cough I've had.

Only good news is that winter supposedly will be over in five weeks. Thanks, Phil. Shadow or not, it's always at least 6 more weeks. LOL

Just as the snow disappears with 'balmy' 40° temps, it's back. Very mild - just an inch. Unfortunaltely the El Niño weather conditions hasn't removed the nasty 'bugs' and with grandchildren in school around this has wreaked havoc on our household since Thanksgiving. Ah, well. This too shall pass.

The wind may be a factor. Yesterday, I got mashed against a car for about three seconds, unable to beat the wind.

But today walking the Evo on the Parkway, in a totally different part of town, different elevation, and a week later, I saw more ice hair. The first time, it was with soil of the same color and loose. I stopped to look at the hoodoos and then saw the ice hair. I picked it up, and it ran about 2 inches deep - again, built on no substrate. Then, walking back, I started noticing it in other places, with brown dirt. In one place, the hairs were about 5 inches long. On another creek, I spied ice balls formed around leaf stems.

Even though winter is almost over, some parts of the walk were very verdant, with pine, moss, mountain laurel (still droopy from the draught), and azalea.

Sounds more exciting than here. We get nothing but cold, wet and gray at this time of year. Often I feel like I live deep in a swamp. Dog and I are laying around, and I'm attempting to watch a BBC miniseries I bought at Costco and pecking at my taxes.

Can I say something nice about the Spring Thaw? I have orange hummingbirds once again in my yard. And Mayflies too, so the swallows aren't far behind. I'll let cha know.

In the meantime, some Frazil Ice Laugh

It was good, with only a few days bitter enough to chill through five layers. It really helped to have the Justin shows at the end. December isn't too bad here, but all through January, one could think, "Just one more month and we can chase Justin across the countryside."

Cold here... very cold. some snow. My orange hummers are again back, so it's been a year we have not visited this thread! Planning both the June tour and the Florida vacation in Dec/Jan.

I saw some beautiful ice formations at the riverside. Part of the beach looked like a miniature Bryce Canyon, full of hoodoos; and ice spread in ledges onto the river. It formed beautiful dendritic patterns elsewhere. I love the sound of clinking ice when I step on a frozen puzzle and make it fly all about. I love the pretty designs of white and clear I wreck when doing so. It snowed twice this winter as I recall. The first time, it was so dry, the lady at the gas station said she had to add water to get it to pack enough to make a snowman. It stayed powdery until it melted a few days later and never turned to crust. The last time, it only lasted about a day, but it was so powdery, one could still see individual snowflakes (1-2mm in diameter) resting on the piles, so pretty. I can dig snow in smallish patches if the sun is out and it's not too cold.

Here's a Hint from Heloise I discovered this winter. Here, the frost on windshields is often too thin and uniform to scrape with the tools one purchases to scrape windshields. This year, I used the lid of a take-out (takeaway) coffee cup. I did not drink coffee, I just used the lid, down side on the glass, to clear the windshield with light scrubbing motions. And thus we see that though my normal writing is entirely schizo, trying to write helpful household tips is further from my forte.

I use an old credit card... scrapes real well.

End of winter this year, we are having outrageous high winds. I don't remember a spring like this in the 18 or so years I've been in this town. It WAS a nice walk tonight, went out in the daylight for a change, and enjoyed the wind. Home with a cup of coffee right now.

Day by day, things get greener and warmer. I even smelled scents of photosynthesis today.

Nice day here, big fluffy clouds.... and alas rain off and on. No rain, no green I guess. Off to get some coffee and try to kick these allergies or cold or whatever I have.

As was mentioned elsewhere, I don't drink coffee. I prefer to call a mechanic to scrape me off the floor with a putty knife. Me thinks I'll go sweepy-bye. Boss has a convention early tomorrow.

Stop trying to bury that Spanish stuff. Those people should be turned over to the FBI. Creeps, like other people can't read Spanish???

My driveway looked like that for one of our snowstorms here.

Yes. The grass is very green now, and on occasion I hear a fwoggie-fwop. (That's what EVO! calls it when a frog jumps into a pond.) I heard them singing and a chorus of crickets last night, but the river smelled of dead fish. Other than that, the sky has been beautiful. Daffodils have been around a long time. Forget-me-knots never took a break as did dandelions. Red buds are about as well as many white flowering trees. Little violets and purple flowers that grow on stalks and little violet trumpettes are everywhere. The boss has some cool, deep periwinkle flowers that grow wild and sparsely. Phlox, asters, and wild violets [Supply your own verb]. I practically missed the crocuses. I was outside without a coat this afternoon.

Back to the frazil ice video, the clip of Horsetail Fall flashed me back. My father had a home movie of it on reel-to-reel. He told us kiddinks an Indian threw the fire down the falls, and I believed him. I forgot all about it until I saw the video and heard the narrator speak as if it was a natural February phenomenon. Sho-nuff, it was the sun and not an Indian throwing fire.
