Oh I think I was running a fever the other night. My grandma in her lifetime saw Halley's comet, and the Wright brothers (she might have even traveled to KC to see them barnstorm, my great grandfather took his girls places like that, he was an advanced thinker and a US marshal). Then of course, we ALL saw the Moon landing............. US as in "we Americans" walked on the Moon, And when you see the moon, be sure to wink at it, and think of Neil.
Advancing tech is amazing........... logarithmic in fact
Oh stop with the obtuse-ness!
AGh you had to remind me. The Chilli Peppers were in town at the Admiral Theatre Friday, and I copped out didn't go. The photo in the newspaper was great!!!! kilts and bagpipes.... I KNEW I should have gone! NOOooo I was hoarding my ducats to see Justin over and over again all over the west coast.........
We were watching "Ed Sullivan's Rock and Roll" PBS special last evening ('promotion show' you know ). My brother and I were commenting about the various groups they were showcasing, and at one point he said during the conversation about the Beatles, that the Beatles were the first pop group ever to have a hit single that was in a minor key (Love Me Do). I asked him how he knew that and he said a friend of his who was a guitar player years ago told him that....
Anyway...ova to someone else....
11+4=15
Oh that can't be true. Didn't Elvis sing anything in a minor key? Or Bob Wills? Now you're making me think!!!!
Maybe it depends on what you consider "pop".......... Billie Holiday was she "pop"????
Brutha was wrong... here you go
P.S. I always had a problem differentiating between minor keys and major keys with an accidental minor third, unless the ratio of tones leans vastly one way or the other. You know how those rockers love (I started to type "lovers rock.") dissonance for shock value. It's one of those things everybody does to show how nonconformist they are. Frankly, my wee little mind, seeking peace, love and harmony, managed to translate the song to a major key. l never would have guessed until I sat down and played the YouTube version with the Virtual Keyboard. Besides, they're singing in that rock-and-roll chorus harmony that creates a full sound with cacophony. I don't like it if I pay attention to it because I can't figure out how people harmonize like that - CSN & Sometimes Y being a prime example. It sounds OK, but I couldn't join in to fill in the blanks if I needed to.
Which only goes to show I need to spend more time studying music.
just hum the first chord to yourself and you can tell if it's major or minor key. "Tequila" is for sure minor (and blues) predates "Love me Do" and was a really major hit as I recall. "Tequila" and "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" have the same rhythm at the end too.
CSNY uses a lot of "sevenths" I think you take a regular chord on the piano, then add another at the top, like C-E-G-B sorta thing. (That would be in a C key). They are not minor, for example "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" is in major key, but with lots of 7ths in the harmonies (I think). Yeah, CSNY was pretty darn unique with the harmonies all reet. A bit beyond your normal blues sound.
I haven't studied THAT much music, just read it and goof around on the guitar.... the structures are different but oddly the same. I *think* I'm using the right terms, Gordy would probably slap me around for mis use of terminology. He really HAS studied it.
But "Guinevere" is in a minor key, but with the same distinctive harmonies.......
My issue is - Let's take for example "The Shadow of Your Smile." It had a melody so minor it disturbed me as a child, in a pretty, melancholy way before I had much in the way of music theory. "Love Me Do," to me, sounds major-key until it hits those seemingly accidental flattened thirds.
My method is I look up the sheet music, check the key signature, and see on what note the song ends. I heard sheet music is going the way of the dinosaur. It's sad only in a jealous kind of way, as I never had the opportunity to make enough noise to get proficient at playing by ear. Besides, sheet music is so much easier to read than those little characters on the device screens. Moog has these arrays of keys that you punch, and the software puts the blocks down in a way the computer can play it back. The last time I had anything to do with wave-shaping software, you could record maybe four measures on your normal computer before you crashed the whole thing.
Ah you never had an Amiga! My 1000 had Deluxe Music, and it was a lot of fun... could "write" music by dragging icons and playing it back... fun fun!!!! Better than a video game. Same thing is on http://www.noteflight.com now.
leslee they can't make sheet music a thing of the past! You know periodically someone comes along and tried to rewrite stuff like dance notation or math in elementary schools, and they always go back to "the old way" ........... some things can't be improved on. Heheh did you ever see DANCE notation???? Very rare the person who knows that!!!! (I do) Looks like very weird sheet music. Similar approach. Never took off alas.......... Never will now with the coming of easy video.
How interesting. When I was very small, I remember riding in the car with my family, and hearing this marvelous magical song "Ghost Riders in the Sky" it still sends shivers up my back, very much a minor key. It was exciting and spooky, and never disturbed me. I wanted to go ride the storm clouds with them..... might be the Irish coming out in me.
Well Key Am and Key C for example, are going to have the same signature.... you can't tell THAT way!!! I just hum the chords and figure it out. Minor is melancholy and mysterious. Major is "normal." You should corner Alan or Gordy sometime and ask them how to tell from reading the sheet music.
Here, found the modern version. It's a little gnarly, but very Los Angeles. I thought it was a well done movie myself, about evil and redemption. I guess Nick Cage has made sequels but I haven't kept up with it.
See you lost me. I learned music theory from the standpoint of an eight year old. You take a major key (C chord) and the starting at the C, you count back three and find the A, make a chord with no sharps or flats. Amin. Same works for all keys... you go to key of G (which has one sharp because it's five up from C) then count back three to find Dmin which also has one sharp.
I learned in simple terms. I have no idea what a minor third is. I can do the whole spectrum of chords MY way tho. You find the sharp to the next key by going back one and sharping it. You find the flat for that key by going up another four and that is the flat. (Like, F is four up from C, go up another four to B, and that is the flat for the key of F) I've seen all these really wild charts and wheels in classes, and they make no sense. I learned it on a keyboard.
I wish I had more time to study music. Too much else in my life, like getting tires for the car, and a tune up.
Oh sorry. We should find a keyboard and goof around.... 12 tones. Five keys black for convenience I suppose. I remember finding E# and the big grin my piano teacher had when I reached that conclusion. The name was changed to protect the guilty.
Those are REALLY evil signatures when they have E sharp. And B#. Gerschwin and Debussy wrote that sort of thing just to MESS with us.
To set the record straight, would Mr. NSA Man please tell Alan I was not making fun of him. I think everybody was impressed at how he skilfully brought everything together in "The Voice." The thing was I don't know squat about electronic music, and so when I asked Alan if everything was live, I thought I was asking if he was fingering all the notes rather than pushing one button/key for a set of notes. Since he said it was live, that would mean in my little mind that what happened was highly improbable. That's all. Oh, how I long to be able to make some noise to get up to speed some day, which will probably not be in this life. I would love to hover over Alan and see all he does, but then I see Justin, and, well . . .
No one thinks you're making fun of them .................
On occasion I've suspected Justin's voice of being dubbed, but I've seen him live so much it's negligible. And I know they don't resort to dubbing unless absolutely necessary. I haven't suspected dubbing in fact for many years now... (shrug) like you I am lost on electronic music. No musical expert here!!!
Julie's on key and blends in very well, I have to say. Once in a while Tracy would show too much "Tracy" in the mix, even though I really loved her voice. She, Ray and Justin did harmonies that were cosmic. I miss her. Bernie also has a very very good voice, a little more distinctive than Julie.
Vocal blending can be a marvelous thing. I see a lot of school choirs, in my job... especially around Christmas. Anyway I saw a very cute performance the other day, but they lost all the harmonies... they were just little guys, like 10 years old. While, gosh about a month ago, I wound up subbing for the High School choir, and they were self directing (that is the strongest personality was appointed director)........... my *** it was ethereal. I clapped when they finished. If I could find a good Lutheran choir group, I'd go back to church just to be part of it.
Choir is always a little tough to sub for........... they tend to be goofy and very social, many hijinks. But if they sound good, that makes up for it all.
I absolutely loved Bernie's voice. Julie seemed nervous at first, but she's O-tay now
I really don't recall a time when I thought Justin had dubbing. When his voice cracks, it cracks. When he gets choked up, no voice continues. When he botches the words, nobody else is singing the right words. No, I do believe he's real an O so good.
I want to scream, "JUSTIN!" and go on a cruise.
